How Mahindra + Prad 4x4 Turned the Thar Roxx Into a Military Machine

If you thought the regular Thar Roxx was tough, Mahindra Defence Systems has taken things to another level. A brand-new tactical ATV based on the Thar Roxx was revealed this week, and it’s not for weekend trail runs. This one’s built for the Indian Armed Forces.

The vehicle broke cover at the Raksha Triveni Sangam event in Prayagraj, where Defence Minister Rajnath Singh got a close look at it. But most of us first saw it when Anand Mahindra dropped photos on X on May 4, 2026. His caption said it all: “No excess. No ornamentation. Just focussed capability.”

And he wasn’t kidding.

So What Exactly Is This Thar Roxx ATV?

Think of it as a Thar Roxx that went through military boot camp. Mahindra Defence developed it with Bengaluru-based off-road specialists Prad 4x4. The brief was simple strip everything that isn’t essential and armor up everything that is.

The result? A mean-looking, open-top, doorless machine that looks like it drove straight out of a battlefield video game. But this is very real, and it’s headed for trials with the Army’s Northern and Central Commands.

Design: Function Over Flash, Every Single Inch

Walk around this ATV and you’ll notice what’s missing before you notice what’s added. There’s no roof. No windshield in the traditional sense. The regular doors are gone, replaced by skeletal tube doors for quick entry and exit during operations. The C and D-pillars? Deleted to save weight.

What it does have is a full tubular roll cage that doubles as a weapon mounting system. There’s space for a 360-degree turret up top, likely for a 7.62mm medium machine gun. The front bumper is pure muscle – winch, tow hooks, recovery points, and even blackout lighting for night ops.

Other bits that caught my eye: jerry-can holders on the rear quarter, a tandem tyre carrier on the back, MOLLE-compatible storage panels, and full underbody blast protection. Prad 4x4 also claims it’s airdrop-ready, which is a huge deal for rapid deployment in tough terrain like Ladakh or the Northeast.

Under the Hood: Familiar Power, Different Purpose

Mahindra didn’t mess with what works. The Defence ATV uses the same 2.2-litre mHawk diesel you get in the civilian Thar Roxx. That means 172 HP and 400 Nm of torque, sent to all four wheels through a proper 4x4 system.

But the similarities stop there. This version rides on chunky 18-inch all-terrain tyres wrapped around heavy-duty steel wheels. The suspension is raised and re-tuned for abuse. Ground clearance is up, and the approach/departure angles are better thanks to those chopped bumpers.

From what Anand Mahindra shared, the ATV can seat 7 personnel and carry mission equipment. It’s not about luxury. It’s about getting troops and gear from point A to point B when there’s no road.

Basically, Mahindra took a lifestyle SUV and turned it into a tactical tool. Nothing extra. Everything earned its place.

Why This Matters for Indian Defence

India’s been pushing for “Atmanirbhar Bharat” in defence manufacturing. Mahindra already supplies the Armado, Marksman, and modified Scorpios to the forces. This Thar Roxx-based ATV slots in as a light, fast, multi-role vehicle.

In a conflict zone, you need vehicles that can be air-dropped, carry a squad, mount a gun, and take a beating. Imported options like the Polaris DAGOR are expensive. A homegrown platform based on the proven Thar Roxx keeps costs down and spares easy.

The Army will test this ATV extensively at the North Tech Symposium 2026. If it clears trials, expect an order for border units.

Final Thoughts

Mahindra has always had a strong connection with the Indian Army, right from the old MM540 days. With the new Thar Roxx ATV, they’ve taken a modern, popular platform and given it a proper combat makeover.

It’s raw, it’s purposeful, and it shows how quickly Indian manufacturers can adapt civilian tech for defence needs. The fact that it was showcased to the Defence Minister and shared by Anand Mahindra himself tells you this isn’t just a concept. This is Mahindra saying “we’re ready.”

Let’s see how it performs in trials. But one thing’s clear the Thar nameplate just got a lot more hardcore.
