Public Transport Fare Hike in Nepal, Up to 22% Increase for 2026

The cost of commuting and shipping items around Nepal has recently increased dramatically. The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) has formally modified public transportation charges on interprovincial routes in response to a significant increase in global gasoline costs and the introduction of the government's "automatic pricing system."

Whether you are a daily commuter in the valley or a business owner relying on freight to move goods from the Terai to the Hills, these changes will impact your pocket immediately.

Why did the fares increase?

The primary driver behind this hike is the skyrocketing cost of petroleum. Currently, petrol has hit Rs. 202 per liter and diesel is at Rs. 182 per liter. According to the DoTM, fares must be adjusted whenever fuel prices fluctuate by more than Rs. 5 per liter.

This 2026 adjustment is based on a "scientific" calculation where fuel accounts for 35% of the fare, while the remaining 65% covers 13 other indicators including tires, lubricants, and maintenance costs.

New Fare Adjustment Table (Effective April 2026)

Category Increase Percentage Impacted Routes
Passenger Vehicles 16.71% Long-distance Inter-provincial routes
Cargo (Hilly Routes) 21.68% Kathmandu, Pokhara, and other hill regions
Cargo (Terai Routes) 15.75% Birgunj, Bhairahawa, and southern plains

Key Highlights of the 2026 Fare Revision

  • Long-Distance Travel: Traveling the country’s longest route (Kathmandu–Attariya–Bajura) now costs Rs. 3,656 for a normal bus, up from the previous Rs. 3,132.

  • Deluxe Services: For those opting for comfort, Deluxe buses can charge an additional 20% on top of the base fare, with Super Deluxe tickets reaching over Rs. 5,200 on certain routes.

  • The "Hilly" Surcharge: Cargo transport in the hills has seen the steepest hike at nearly 22%, which is expected to trigger a ripple effect on the price of daily essentials and construction materials in cities like Kathmandu.

  • Local Fares: While the DoTM sets the benchmark for inter-provincial travel, local provincial governments (like Bagmati for Kathmandu Valley) will follow suit to revise short-distance fares shortly.

What about Electric Vehicles (EVs)?

There is a small silver lining: Electric Vehicles (EVs) are currently not subject to this specific fare hike. This is part of the government's ongoing effort to promote cleaner energy, though transport entrepreneurs are already lobbying for a separate adjustment for electric public transport due to rising maintenance and battery costs.

How will this affect the market?

As a logistics provider or a traveler, it is crucial to stay updated. Higher freight rates usually lead to "cost-push inflation," meaning your groceries, electronics, and fuel-dependent services might see a price bump in the coming weeks.
